Planning - Ideas for Props/Themes

/

In order to get an idea of the types of props we need to use in our final video, we need to look at similar videos to the type of video we want to produce. One of the ideas for props or themes that we have so far is to some how incorporate a similar feel to that that we found in the music video for 'Feeling Good' by Michael Buble. We discovered from looking at this video, and many other Michael Buble videos, that the suit, for example, is synonymous with Michael Buble and is part of the costume of which his audience expect to see when they see Buble.
We found there are very few instances when his suits are not black/grey.

As a result, while the real music video for the song we have chosen 'Crazy Love' is one of the very few videos of which we see him in casual clothing instead of a suit, we felt that the suit would be the ideal costume as it is far more conventional in Buble's videos. Also, we approved of the fact that in the cases where we see a suit in his videos, it is always black,/grey, which again connotes the idea of professionalism, and an almost James Bond-like feel, of which we see so prominently in the 'Feeling Good'. This is certainly a theme we are considering.

In the case of the lighting, the music video 'Cry me a River' (shot above) is certainly the video of which we feel we took most influence from. In the music video, the lights are positioned in a way that we feel was simplistic, but also very effective. As it seen in the mid-shot above, there are three sets of lights, with lights either side of him, and one set in the centre, therefore giving the impression that he is surrounded in a sphere of light, giving him a sense of importance, and emphasizing his role as the focal point of the video.

Black and White are colours typical of  a Michael Buble video

Furthermore, while we do see three sets of lights in this video, there is very little other light, if any, for the majority of the video. I thought that this was very interesting as I  found that in the case of many of Buble's videos, 'Feeling Good' and 'Cry me a River' being two examples, there is very much this continuing theme of light/dark imagery (as is seen through the black and white image above), reminiscent of old gangster films to some extent. In the case of 'Cry me a River', I found also that it was quite a typical convention of his video for the only real light to be focused on him, as he is portrayed as the savior/ in a God-like way to his audience. Overall, while we may not be able exactly the layout of the lighting we choose to use, it has certainly given us a good estimation as how we would like the lighting to look in our video.
